Do You Qualify?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are eligible for in-state tuition, including through AB540.
  • Are an incoming first-year or transfer student.
  • Are Pell Grant eligible (FAFSA applicants) OR have a Student Aid Index (SAI) of 9,000 or below (CADAA applicants).
  • Enroll full-time at SSU (12 or more units).

Three Simple Steps To Get Started

  • Apply to Sonoma State as a first-year or transfer student.
  • Complete your FAFSA or CADAA by the published deadline.
  • You’re all set! No separate application required. Eligible students are automatically identified.

How Does It Work?

The Sonoma State Promise covers system-wide tuition and mandatory campus fees remaining after federal, state, and university grant aid. Renewable for up to four years for first-year students and two years for transfer students, subject to continued eligibility, full-time enrollment, Satisfactory Academic Progress, and annual FAFSA or CADAA submission by the priority deadline. Only tuition and mandatory fees for Fall and Spring semesters are covered. Winter and Summer Session courses, as well as courses offered through Extended Education, are not covered. Housing, meals, and books are also not included

Who’s Not Eligible?

The Sonoma State Promise doesn’t apply to:

  • Continuing Sonoma State University students who entered before Fall 2026
  • Graduate or credential students
  • Non-California residents
  • Students in Extended Education programs

If you take a gap semester or transfer to another school, the guarantee ends and may not be extended if you return later.
